Causes of Aviation Accidents

Aviation accidents are tragic events that often lead to serious injuries and the deaths of many passengers and crew members. While traveling by plane is generally considered to be one of the safest modes of transportation, there is still always the risk of a plane crash anytime you fly.

Types of Aircrafts Involved in Aviation Accidents

Aviation accidents occur in many different situations and under a variety of conditions. There are many different types of aircrafts used for transportation in our society, and they all have the potential to be involved in an accident. Therefore, it is important that the flight crew is skilled, experienced, and can identify potential signs of danger before it is too late to prevent a tragedy.

Some of the types of planes and aircrafts involved in aviation accidents include:

  • Commercial airlines
  • Private airplanes
  • Private helicopter operations
  • Offshore helicopter operations
  • Sightseeing helicopter operations
  • Helilogging
  • Helicopter herding
  • Air ambulance/emergency medical services (EMS)
  • Military aircraft

Of these, commercial airlines are involved in more accidents than any other type of aircraft.

Causes of Aviation Accidents

There are many diverse factors that a pilot must deal with while flying a plane. As a result, plane crashes can be caused by a variety of adverse events in the course of a flight. After a plane crash, investigators will rush to the scene to try and identify the cause of the accident. Sometimes, the cause will be obvious. However, in many cases, it can be difficult to accurately determine the cause.

Investigators are still trying to identify the cause of a recent Butte, Montana plane crash involving a single-engine private plane. The aircraft plunged into a cemetery right by the airport where it was supposed to land. Due to a lack of evidence at the crash site, it has been difficult to conclusively determine its cause. However, investigators now believe that ice on the wings might have led to the tragic accident that killed 14 passengers.

In general, the majority of aviation accidents are caused by human error or mechanical failure. Some of the most common causes of plane crashes include:

  • Piloting errors
  • Faulty equipment
  • Violations of FAA regulations
  • Design or structural problems with the aircraft
  • Flight service negligence
  • Air traffic controller error
  • Maintenance or repair negligence
  • Fueling error
  • Adverse weather conditions
  • Improper loading
  • Pilot fatigue
